A Sense of Place – Mick Coventry

I love the look, the feel, and the smell of a new book. The excitement it generates, and the anticipation of what may be to come. I had that feeling as soon as I received a copy of ‘A Sense of Place, and I couldn’t wait to open it and immerse myself in its pages.

Best described as a poetic memoir, ‘A Sense of Place’ takes the reader on a journey through time, using the author’s extensive collection of his own award-winning poetry, interspersed with significant photographs and commentary.

The author has led an interesting life with childhood memories of growing up in many New South Wales country towns, time spent living and working in Papua New Guinea, and family stories, both past and present.

Although coming to the world of writing traditional Australian rhyming poetry quite late in life, the author has quickly mastered the art of rhythm and metre, and this collection of poetry is a wonderful example of this traditional Australian art form. Reading these poems will appeal to a generation of Australians who were privileged to grow up with the likes of Lawson and Paterson.

I particularly like the way the author has linked his story and the poetry together and the book has provided me with a nostalgic trip back to my own childhood and has dusted off many cobwebs from the back blocks of my mind.

I would highly recommend ‘A Sense of Place’ to all lovers of traditional Australian rhyming poetry, those that are inspired by award winning poetry, and those that appreciate the sense of history it provides, and the memories it can muster.
